Songs of Summer 2009

Every summer I try to make a mix that is made up of the best current songs—the songs that capture the freewheeling whimsy of these long humid days. These are the songs I’ve been blasting in my car on the California highways these past months. This was my list last summer, and the following are my picks for this summer. What are yours?

Sufjan Stevens, “You Are the Blood”
Neko Case, “Middle Cyclone”
Akron/Family, “River”
Death Cab for Cutie, “Kicked In”
Sunset Rubdown, “You Go On Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)”
Clipse, “Kinda Like a Big Deal”
The Shins, “Plenty Is Never Enough”
Bibio, “Ambivalence Avenue”
Wilco, “You and I”
Dirty Projectors, “Stillness is the Move”

Animal Collective, “Summertime Clothes”

Phoenix, “1901″

Santogold, “Lights Out”

Grizzly Bear, “Two Weeks”

Passion Pit, “Sleepyhead”

Jay-Z, “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”

M. Ward, “Rave On”

  1. I have been absolutely nuts about “Stillness Is The Move” throughout this summer, and went to see them live a while ago. The crazy dancing that the soloist adds to the song when performing live is great, but then again, there is a llama in the video, which is also pretty amazing. The similarity between it and David Longstreth is uncanny actually…

  2. 1. That Neko Case song KILLS me. Kills me, Brett!
    2. Couldn’t agree more about “River”
    3. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: Surf City’s S/T EP has been my album of summer.
    4. I’ll add to that list “You Go On Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)”
    5. And “California Stars” – Billy Bragg & Wilco. Not new, but I can’t stop listening to it.
    6. Florence & The Machine – “The Dog Days Are Over” rounds it out. For this month, anyway.

    Good list.

  3. Please make an iTunes playlist and post a link!

  4. I like very much! i would also add No One’s Better Sake from Little Joy (or how to hang a Warhol…really anything from that album ^_^)

  5. I haven’t consciously heard or listened to any of these; so I’m gonna respond to the music videos. Just for kicks and tickles. Yes, I said that.

I find the “Stillness…” video and the song strangely contradictory. Am I too old?

I adore “Summertime Clothes”. Perhaps because I like the song better than “Stillness” but I think the video complements the song much better. This video is fascinating and mesmerizing. But maybe that’s again because I was born in the late 70s. It really makes me feel like it’s 2 AM and I’m giddy with delight at being able to stay up as late as I want. Tee hee!

Love “1901”. I need a convertible and a sunny day to listen to it. ;) Watching the pianist (love that he’s seated) and the drummer is fun! Love that he threw the mic on the floor.

“Lights Out” is fun but not exceptional – both the song and the video. I think the video needs a cat. And a Target logo at the end.

“Two Weeks” was fascinating also. I couldn’t look away. Not sure I liked it though.

“Sleepyhead” is fun. Good summer-song but like a lot of the videos here, it needs a story. Like “Auto-Tune” and “Rave On.”

Hands down, “Rave On” is my favourite. It feels like summer and the video is unique and imaginative. Woot!

  6. Nice list. Last month I put together a summer mix, though only a few of the songs would be considered “current.” Here tis. (sorry, i don’t know how to make links shorter!)

  7. I tried to avoid Phoenix, since I have a hatred of all things French pop. But I got to admit that I love their new album, “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix!”
