Bracelet Freaks at Disneyland

June 17, 2008 · 129 Comments

So I went to Disneyland on Saturday and encountered something I didn’t expect: a huge contingent of emo/goth/candy-kid teenagers decked out in black clothes and tons of neon bracelets, necklaces, and glow sticks. And I mean these kids were everywhere. In line for every ride there was a whole bevy of them, flashing their multicolored arms (some of them had hundreds of bracelets on, covering all limbs) and generally acting bizarre. In line for Space Mountain several of them started this random clap/chant thing and kept shouting for each other to “show us your light show!” (whatever that means). Do they think they’re at a rave?

Anyway, I found it all extremely fascinating. Why are these creepy teens so attracted to Disneyland, and what’s up with the neon bracelets and glow sticks? Are they all on Ecstasy too? Is this something akin to the whole pacifier/glow-stick idea of coopting cute baby things for trippy adolescent party culture shenanigans? It’s quite something to see these sinister freaks pouring out of every corner of what is supposed to be the happiest place on earth (though for someone as obsessed with hipsters and subcultures as I am, I have to say I kind of enjoyed “freak spotting”).

I’m absolutely fascinating by their apparent affinity for Disneyland. Is this Johnny Depp-as-Jack Sparrow inspired? Or just some sort of weird SoCal kids’ subculture? Is it some act of mass countercultural rebellion or just a bunch of insecure kids trying their best to have a good time, even amid throngs of screaming babies, smelly tourists, and bourgeois mayhem? In any case, it’s a very interesting and ironic phenomenon: so many frightening fringe adolescents looming around the family-friendliest theme park in the world.

Has anyone else experienced this at Disneyland? Anyone have a clue as to who or what this subculture/trend is all about? I’d love to know.

This whole thing is mentioned in Chuck Klosterman IV.

I think your last guess is probably the most accurate. My cousin was an “emo” kid for awhile, but when you come down to it, they’re just kids trying to find their voice/identity/etc., you know, not “sinister freaks.” That’s a pretty hostile thing to say.

I guess I share your fasicnation with these freaks. I was there too and I can tell you that I’ve never seen such a strange group of kids! Usually you can tell that kids are rebelling by the way they dress, but who rebels by wearing neon colored bracelets with a Strawberry Shortcake ragdoll hanging off its side?

I spent all day trying to figure out what their fascination with the beads represented. Perhaps we give them too much credit. They probably are just freaks.

im sad to see that people see us as freaks, were not. we just like the olors what this person was seeing was a moving MOB party. a bunh of us all eaho other up and we line up at a site and walk around in our kandy glory. we like being seen as different the beads have no specail meaning other than its bright and colorful. no we werent on any specail E its just the way we are and i for one do not like being called a freak.

Yeah, I was actually there on the same day you were (how about that!). I would describe my reaction to the hoards of raver kids as fascination as well. I had heard of kandy kids before, but I wasn’t really sure they actually existed. Seeing them all there together was something else. I live in NorCal, so I had never really encountered that phenomenon before. I asked a local family, and they said that these bracelet freaks were local “clubbers” who had season passes to D-land and frequented the place often (I wasn’t sure how true it was, but I’m pretty sure these people were not from out of state). Their clothing certainly is congruous with the immaturity of Disneyland, but I have to wonder if they dress like that all the time. The bracelets and baggy clothes and colored plastic was just ridiculous. I mean, I like techno music, but I’m not about to dress like… that. Some of the girls were pretty good lucking (they just dressed slutty and weird), but I saw many that were… well, let’s say I couldn’t really see more than a couple fitting into a typical rave. Ugh.

That’s right. I had totally forgotten about Chuck Klosterman’s essay. I’ll have to read it again now that I’ve experienced it first hand!

I agree that calling people ’sinister freaks’ is a bit full on. It’s cool to be fascinated but just because we don’t understand someone it doesn’t mean we should be quick to judge and in doing so create as ‘us and them’ culture. This kind of fear is the basis of racism, war & genocide. Maybe attempting a conversation and asking them a few questions could be a start?

heh. this reminds me of my own “those were the days/wear more clothing, children” type raves that tell me I’m getting older.
when I see freaky-looking adolescents, a lot of times i just see scared and vulnerable kids trying to cover it up with a lot of makeup and flashy jewelry.

hope you dont join the movement…
    because you will never understand.

Hmmmm I was there, and I’m a raver… But I had no idea that it was raver day till I got there. :]

I think it’s wrong to assume that everyone who frequents the scene is the same. I dress perfectly normal and preppy, but I on all occassions like to show a little kandee pride.

The entire movement is almost a sort of modern hippie-ism. Our entire culture is based off of peace, love, unity, and respect. It’s about having fun. Letting go. Being yourself. :] Everyone approaches it differently however.

I myself was not rolling (on ecstasy) the day of raver day, but have rolled at Disney in the past. It’s fun for us because Disney is the emboidement of adolescence. It’s so full of atmosphere and fun. (If you ignore the seven hundred other people.) Thus it’s the “Happiest Place on Earth.”

Don’t stereotype or judge. As long as no one gets hurt, whats wrong with a little p.l.u.r? :]

I was a raver and although never did the whole “daytime”thing, I know plenty of people that wear there rave pride all day, every day. It is okay to have an interest with people from different sub-cultures and it is okay to not understand them and why they dress/act/behave like they do, but don’t judge(freak spotting is so not a cool term), and they are most certainly not sinister freaks just a group of young people going to a theme park . I bet you would not call a group of teens from a religious organisation wearing church/religious shirts “sinister freaks”.
Look up PLUR, I think you just might need to know what it means.

i know about kandi kids. after all i am one and am friends with lots of them. of course we are used to people calling us “freaks”. but here’s something behind us and the way we are. we dress in what is pretty. bracelets and such are our “kandi” and it is very pretty. we like to act wierd because it is easier to meet people and to be friends with them if you are outgoing. If you stay polite and keep to yourself your entire life you might have a different experience than what we have had. We all have our preferences. To us getting dressed is a highlight of the day. We try to make every moment all that it can be, and we try to meet all of the interesting head-on.

  • KandiLuv // September 9, 2008 at 4:07 pm | Reply

Hey, hey. Why are you being so mean? I don’t think anyone appreciates being called a freak because of how they dress. Us kandi kids are very secure and happy in being ourselves.

We’re not trying to rebel, and we’ve been around since before Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow! Haha.

All the kandi kids were just there to have a good time at D-land just like you.

The only thing I really got out of your article is that people fear something they don’t know a thing about, and I missed Raver Day. T_T Haha.

    P.L.U.R.

    P.S.: No, we don’t all roll. :)

I really like you being facinated by those kids, but I don’t you should call them “freaks”.
Most of them are just “normal” kids, but they just like diffrent kinds of clothing than you do.
I also dress like that, but kind of darker.
But I’ve also got those kandi bracelets ect, me and my friends have a lot of fun and we are not trying to scare people off, or make them see us as freeks. We’re just having fun and trying to have a good time together. Cause some of my friends have really trouble at home, but if we’re all together they can just forget about it a second and have fun.
    I hope u understand =^.^=

Hay, I might be one of the ‘Candy kids’ your talking about. I think there might have been a shit load of teens there on drugs. When they yell “Show us your light show, there pretty much asking
    1. are you drugged up?
    2. can you rave?
    3. are you a HCRaver. [hard core]

When kids wear ‘candy’ or bracelets, that shows how many raves theve been to.
:D If you want more info, don’t be shy to mail me.

Ok, so the pacifier thing; It’s not about being immature. That stems from the raver Ecstacy… the glowsticks look AWESOME when “rolling,” a term used to describe being high on X, and the pacifier is to prevent the grinding of teeth. While it’s true that not all kandi kids or even all ravers use or wear these for those reasons (some might just think it’s cute, like you said) that’s the origin.

  • Sparkle Darling // September 22, 2008 at 9:24 pm | Reply

I feel bad for you, and I truly hope that you dont go through everyday life being so judgemental. It’s bad for the soul.

Hale (kandi) – I’m afraid you are so wrong. “Show us your lightshow” really means just that – its a request from someone to have a talented lightshower twirl a bunch of led lights around – its looks awesome. (and i have never done any drugs besides caffiene and nicotine).
The “bracelets” are NOT to determine how many raves someone has gone to. We make them and trade them with friends and strangers – it’s our sign of love to EVERYONE. And most ravers are “soberravers” meaining they don’t use drugs. “All ravers use drugs” is a myth/stereotype. To me, this is just like racism, and it hurts.

We are not emo/goth, we are everyone, we are everywhere. Some people (like me) wear some kandi everyday, but many don’t. Your next door neighbor just very well may be a raver/kandi kid. Next time you see one, why not just talk to them? We are awesome people to get to know, and we never judge. We believe in Peace, Love, Unity, Respect, and Responsibility.

I would love to get to know you and maybe if you are lucky show you a thing or two about PLURR♥

I hope you have an awesome day.

Kandi = friendship between all of our rave friends.
yes it is a subculture I hope you never get into and put your negitivity into.
    PeaceLoveUnityRespect. =Plur
We live but morals, despite how we dress.
We like colorful things they make us happy.
    Emo kids = typically unhappy.
Kandi kids= Id say the oppsoite.

Man and if you have ever seen someone do fire poi, l.e.d. light shows … you might piss you pants. Epecailly to amazing music, and amazing friends.

If you ever happen to see those kids again go up and ask them (nicely) what all the kandi means. Most ravers are really nice people who would be more than happy to tell you if you aren’t an ignorant jerk. This being said I could taste the immense amount of ignorance in the first couple posts. Also ravers aren’t loud and obnoxious to bother other people they are loud and obnoxious because its fun, you should try it sometime.

P.S. I’m a raver, I have a close knit group of friends who rave, and its made a positive difference in my life.

I suppose to an extent I agree with you. I know many Kandi Kids, I myself was one at one point but I was an odd one out. I have yet to meet a Kandi kid who thinks along the lines of your blog/the way I see things. I don’t know any who dress up everyday. The bracelets, well some are worn all the time if their special but they get heavy so if you do wear them every day your silly.

I’m probably gonna get sh** for this but PLUR… Please its very very rare to find ravers who actually practice it. Its a commercialized saying now that pretty much died out in the 90’s when raves started coming out of the underground scene. Don’t get me wrong I love raves and am glad to have experienced them as they are but the true scene is a dieing one.
Sorry ranting there back to your article.

Talk to them and see what their about before you go labeling them freaks. That’s just gonna get you a lot of pissed off raver kids bashing on your blog.

    Keep writing.
I enjoy reading your opinion =]

Haha. I guess this is what happens when somebody goes to Raver Day at Disneyland without knowing it. I always wondered how families and such reacted to it…

The anger and mean words are pretty damn unnecessary though. They didn’t do anything to you, did they?

The people with the bracelets are kandi kids. Presumably, a person makes many of them and when they meet other kandi kids they trade bracelets and have a memory of the person they traded with. For me, my left arm is stuff I made, and the right is stuff I’ve gotten.

A light show is something that is usually a dance done to music (although not necessarily) and involves the use of lights, be it glowsticks, hand-held microlights, gloves, etc. People on ecstasy love light shows (generally) however it’s a form of dance that is actually quite awesome, and one definitely does not need to be intoxicated to appreciate it.

I don’t know why they would be chanting that, but who knows? I wasn’t there, sadly. I wish I had been but I had other plans that day. :(

Some of them use drugs. Some don’t. Many don’t, actually. It’s a pretty bad stereotype.

If I were you, I would think the added visual stimulation of a bunch of people with colorful clothing would be awesome. Even if I didn’t understand it… I think it would be cool. Reacting with hostility and anger isn’t very necessary. Walk up to one and ask them what it’s about… they’ll tell you.

Nothing wrong with adding a little brightness, happiness, peace, love, unity, and respect to this cruel world, hmm? It’s not especially out of place somewhere that deems itself the ‘happiest place on earth’.

    PLUR <3

Hi!!!! YESSS….this is an annual “friend get together” at California’s Disneyland. I am the queen of the RAVE here in SoCal. Sure you will get those young teens who are there to show off but you will also get those who are actual ravers coming together to play. I met a great deal of regular every day park goers with their families. All were very kind and respectful. I have always given my bracelets I made as well as my wisdom about the EDM to these individuals to show my love and respect towards them.

  • Sierra // September 29, 2008 at 2:40 pm | Reply

well, first off. light shows are amazing, even if your not rolling on E, at least after you’ve done it enough then you see trails of lights all the time and its just mindblowing. pacifiers are also very important to rolling, it acts as gum would, something to chew and suck on so you dont grind your teeth. bright colors amuse us druggy kids and we love almost everyone so its great to trade and make bracelets for others as a symbol of respect and love. Were not creepy, prolly some of the nicest most fun people you would ever meet.

oh yeah, not everyone that goes to raves, or is a kandi kid is a druggie. Thats stupid to assume. and I don’t know why it is mensioned so much drugs are not important in this subject. in fact most ravers don’t do drugs, many go for the fun music and good company. and now, it is so hard to get anything into a rave. they pat you down, search all the stuff you bring in (wallets, bags, back packs, shoes, etc,) and so the is little chance of sneaking pills in without getting arrested.

you went there on RAVER DAY which is why you saw so many ravers, i sadly missed this day… just a day that a bunch of people in the rave scene picked to get together and have fun outside of a rave. i went to raver day at 6 flags now THAT was fun haha. why disneyland though? if you noticed what they were wearing lots of kandi kids and ravers looooove kiddy things so disneyland is the perfect place for them. hell its just a fun place period, i loved it long before i was a raver, everyone feels like a kid there.

not all ravers are on Ecstasy, there are plenty of sober ravers, and alot of them just act weird because well they are haha and i say that in a good way, they arent affraid of being themselves and they dont care whos watching they are just having fun.

we arent freaks btw… we are having fun and expressing ourselves a little differently than you are used to seeing. just because someone is different doesnt make them a freak.

I even sat next to a little group of them in CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE the LIGHT SHOW.. there was one girl and she had a light up shirt, and its like a heart that lights up to the beat of the music or the talking beat LOL it was cool…. Yea…so watsup with the “freaks”?? Who are the “freaks”?? I was wondering the same thing you asked haha…

I have to say, calling these kids freaks isn’t exactly fair. They live their own lifestyles and unless they’re hurting us we shouldn’t criticize. I know plenty of kids at my job dress like that in their free time. They’re really happy kids and they enjoy going to amusement parks just like everyone. Just because it’s called “The Happiest Place On Earth.” Doesn’t mean that these kids should be except. Who says they’re even unhappy? From what you’ve said they sounded fine. There’s nothing wrong with dressing extravagantly. I don’t, but bravo to the kids that do. Sadly, it takes a lot of courage to do what they do because ignorant hateful people see something “Out of the normal” and immidiately stereotype it or become frightened via misunderstanding and become hostile. Honestly, not everyone who dresses weird is a freak. These kids want to have fun and have a good time just like everyone else. It doesn’t mean they should have to change themselves to do it. As long as they aren’t harming others then there really should be no problem.

They are not bad people for dressing up differently in you.

My husband and I were there that day as well. It was funny because every time a cluster of these teens walked by, every family or couple nearby was scratching their heads trying to make sense of what they were seeing.

I myself asked friends to see if they knew the meaning of this spectacle. No one did. Being in education, I feel compelled to know what is going on in the teen world, so I can prepare my college students for what they might encounter in the classrooms.

Thanks for the posts. Now I have better terms I can use to search!

alright first off this is not an act, were not trying to rebel, some are just born rebels, were not trying to act or be anything this is just a simple expression, this is the raver life culture, we express outselfs daily by bringing out our inner child, being happy, and free, we practice P.L.U.R, meaning PEACE LOVE UNITY AND RESPECT, the kandi-braclettes are wore to show people how many partys and raves you have been to and they are origionally made to trade, so alot of the kandis you see us wearing, were not made from us, we got them from one of our new found raver buddies….anyway the pacifiers, are for something to suck on when were rolling balls …and if the binky lights up neon colors that just makes it better!! we like to smile and rock strawberry shortcake..and carebears because we can and thats what we do..just like all OF YOU CHOSE TO DRESS NORMAL…just cuz we choose to live a world of color and excitment..and go to raves and vibe, just cuz your all str8 up…boring, non of the less, don’t ever fucking judge us.
    let us do our drugs..
    have our fun
    make weird noises…
    be loud
    be in love
    dress how we want
    .. and…we’re so harmless
    we coulden’t hurt a fly..
    we have care..caring..
    ravers..
:-) its a thing i don’t know if the world could ever get..
its truly peace, and love, and respect..
thats why not all can understand..
because alot of you do NOT have this
AMERICA is def…lacking this. :-) <3AMBER NICHOLE MUELLER…say what cha will..

Even thou half of these posts are fighting for the kids….the kids are actually bashing themselves. I love wearings my braclets, going to events, and swinging glowsticks just as much as the next raver. BUT when did it all become about “rolling balls”. Yes, I’ve ate pills, uppers, downers, lefters..ext. but when did the scene become such a puddle. PLUR is about the music….the peace, love, unity, and respect that is spread on the dancefloor. In this “scene” or whatever you’d like to call it people actually care about the next person and look out for one another. The colors…glowsticks…fuzzy teddy bears..they just make life that much more enjoyable. Some people dont like to blend in everyday…and nothing is wrong with that. Everyone should be able to let their own light shine without being judged. And to whoever wrote this….I bet not one of those kids looked at you with a funny eye, yet you stared them down until they could feel you’r sights on them. Open your mind, your spirit, and your heart to the differences of the world. You might actually feel like you’r living.

hallo there, kandi kid here at your service. :3

you see, every so often we “freaks” enjoy to meet up with each other at disneyland one day. it’s called Raver Day, and it’s a tradition. we have as much right to be there as anyone else. why are you so hostile to something that’s different than you?

and besides, it’s all for FUN. raving, dressing up in kandi and colorful clothing, being loud and playful with our friends, it’s all for fun. :]

and please don’t assume all ravers are druggies. just because yes, ravers are generalized as e-tards or drug addicts, doesn’t mean we all are. real plurr comes from the heart, and NOT from drugs! and it’s downright offensive for you to say that we’re all on drugs when we’re not.

kandi kids are usually the nicest kids you’ll ever meet. we’re not freaks, we’re just, well, young. and well, you only live once, why not enjoy it and do things a little out of the ordinary? and well, kandi kids are very happy – how can we not be when we’re covered in such bright colors! haha. how does a large portion of us at disneyland make it the “unhappiest” place on earth? we’re not hurting anyone. we’re not judging you or calling YOU freaks. like i said before, we’re having fun, we’re here with our friends. just because we’re dressed differently doesn’t mean we can’t be there with everyone else.

it just makes me sad that something like this causes so much hostility against us, but unfortunately as a raver you have to get used to it. :[

but well, we can only hope you can change your mind about us. :] we’re not there to cause any trouble or anything, we’re just here to have fun! :D

and well, basically what i’m trying to say is… lighten up and quit it with the name calling! the world is filled with people who are DIFFERENT than you, learn to live WITH them instead of constantly JUDGING them. Tolerance is a virtue.

remember; peace, love, unity, respect, and RESPONSIBILITY.

You are so rude! Calling them freaks, just because they are different. Just because they wear different (better) clothes to you, just because their hair stands out. Maybe they think YOU’RE a freak because you look different to them! Think about it, say you are blonde and your husbund/wife is blonde and you have 2 kids, but one has brown hair, Are you gonna call it a freak, or dislike that child because it’s ‘different’? NO, DON’T THINK SO!
Are you going to murder someone because everyone is wearing flip-flops and that person is wearing Vans? NO, YOU WOULDN’T!
Just get a life, everyone has a right to what they wear and what they do. You can’t change people to be more like YOU because everyone would be sick!!

to the writer, kandi kids are freaks.

a freak is someone who is unusual. so to the writer, kandi kids are different from his/her norm. everyone is judgmental, so don’t try and give that crud. when you look at someone who is, lets say oriental, you will say he/she is an asian person, you are judging them, maybe it’s the truth, but only in YOUR opinion is it the truth. i myself might see that person as hispanic, who knows?

the social views of life are perceived differently to every person.

so don’t be angry at the writer, you judge too, we’re human. things are different, we like some things, we dislike others, if you’re offended, get used to it.

Everyone will have thier BIAS opinion. The reasoning behind the “every kandi kid is a good person” is just in reflection to the idea that all ravers have one guideline. That guideline is PLUR…peace, love, unity, and respect. However, you are right, not ALL kandi kids are good people. Not all Ravers are good people. I think we should end all of the nonsense and just accept people for who they are…Straight-edge, Raver, Hippie, Goth, Emo…all of the subcultures have good and bad people. It doesnt matter what people like to do with their time…not all people are decent. I’ve met complete assholes…that were “ravers”. Then again I’ve met complete assholes that were “hippies”. Also complete assholes that were “normal civilized citizens”. Meh, What are we fighting for?

  • Jory // February 8, 2009 at 6:04 am | Reply

Well, there has been a lot of opinion expressed but no one has really spelled out the answers to your questions. So here goes. :)

    1) The kids you saw identify as “Candy Kids,” a type of raver who typically listens to happy hardcore, a genre of electronic music. Candy Kids (Or Kandi Kids) love to dress in bright neon colors, with brightly colored hair and such.

    2) Candy Kids feel that we should live in the moment, have fun, love others, and be wild and free. If you notice little children playing, that is exactly what they do. They run around, play games, and laugh… and then somewhere along the way we grow up and stop acting ‘like little kids.’ Candy Kids rebel against this idea of growing up, and they have a huge fondness of everything that has to do with their childhood; Disney Characters, kids TV shows and characters, childrens toys, etc. That’s why Disneyland is SO important to them and so much fun, because there is so much of that childhood nostalgia there. And a lot of them probably organized to go there together on that day which is why you saw so many of them.

    3) The bracelets you noticed they were wearing are called “Kandi.” They make them out neon beads and other little fun items. Like someone else noted, Kandi roughly represents how many raves they have been to / or how many other Candy Kids they have bonded with. Candy Kids will give away one of their bracelets if you’ve really bonded with them; it’s an honor to get one at a rave as a gift.

    coming from a kandi kid..

its not really fair to call them freaks. just becuase we happen to love bright colors and happiness and see the beauty in life.. does not mean we are freaks.

and NO. just because they have binkys in their mouths .. and we wear fun bracelets .. DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE HIGH.. you do not have to be high on x or any other drug to feel the experience of this way of life… our eyes are open. not closed. .. they have just learned to love themselves and the others around them.

  • one of those kids // February 19, 2009 at 6:50 am | Reply

i find it offensive that you call our stereotype “freaks” just because this generation has a different way of being expressive?
and the reasons we spot all over disneyland is we love fun! we’re not like depressed or anything. we love having a happy time just as much as you do.
and also part of the stereotype is acting like a little kid, and we love it, so stop being an asshole. it’s not like we have some disease.
and also if it was in the middle of the day, i doubt that they were rolling. they may have been tripping or high but rolling no. now if this happened at night, then i’d say there was a good chance they were rolling.

  • one of those kids // February 19, 2009 at 6:53 am | Reply

but also as a side note, only pay attention to the note on drugs if they were acting all clingy towards each other.
otherwise kandi kids are naturally happy. live with the fact we don’t need drugs to have a good time

  • slurp // February 24, 2009 at 6:40 am | Reply

i feel badly for you, sir. just because you see a whole bunch of kids dressed in bright colors and odd clothing, playing with glowsticks, lauging and having a good time doesn’t give you the right to call them freaks.

i’m brand new to the rave scene. but it’s already made a huge impact on my life and the way i see things. i’ve met some of THE nicest people at raves. hell, i sat in a closet with three kids i didn’t know for about an hour, talked to them and each of them gave me a piece of kandi before i left. and i haven’t taken them off yet.

honestly, raver kids are no different than hippies. they’re the new counter-culture. every generation has one.

and yeah, some of them do drugs. but not all of them. and a lot of them (like myself) do the drugs but know how to control themselves and their use. again, the hippies had acid. ravers have x.. along with an assortment of other substances. but that doesn’t make them bad people.

they’re just people who like to have fun. they just want to live.

don’t judge. your judgements reflect you and your personality. and your reflection isn’t so pretty.

the bright color bracelets they were wearing is called Kandi. Usually you find kids like this at raves, Kandi is for trading with new friends. i honestly dont know why they brought them to disney land lol but its obvious they wanted attention. A “light show” is wen you use super bright lights (at a rave) and just make crazy patterns with the colored bright lights when the lights are being twirled around quickly. Thats about it. i tink these kid were stuck inbetween goth/emo and ravers…cuz ravers are essentially about bright colors and peace! wen emo/goth kids i assume are about being depressed and anti-social. excuse me for being wrong aout emo kids i honestly dont know anything about it. i rave and i wear the kandi. the people ive meet raving are probably the sweetest people ive ever met. thats it if u have any more questions i’d be happy to answer them

  • JustBeCool // June 14, 2009 at 8:37 pm | Reply

I was at Disneyland yesterday, June 13th and witnessed Raver Day…

I am 31 years old and was there with my girlfriend. At first we were sort of put off by the site of all these colorful people (ranging in ages of what looked like 16 to 27).

I mean, they were everywhere! Like the author of the post said, every line for every ride that we went on had some grouping of these “kandi kids”.

We figured that they must be from some kinda summer camp or some school trip (no pun intended) or something.

They were never disruptive in anyway and were just other people enjoying disneyland to us. They seemed to just be enjoying themselves. So the mild “disdain” for them quickly wore off and we went about our happy day.

After about 6 hours we got even more curious about what it all represented and how there were so many people dressed like this.

I approached a guy at one point and asked him what it all meant if there was a trip or outing going on. He was nice enough as he explained that it was “through a website” and everyone comes and “wears the candy so you can identify each other and then you trade them with new people and have a good time.”

I left that conversation still a little bit confused about it all so a couple hours later my girl and I walked up to a small group of three kids and I asked again what this all was for.

The two guys and one girl that we talked to were very nice. They told us about raver day and about the “kandi”. While we talking with them one of the guys pulled off two of his bracelets and gave one to me and one to my girlfriend.

We wore them for the rest of the day.

In fact, I was already wearing a similar bracelet (although much smaller and more subtle). It represents a good friend of mine who passed away earlier this year from liver cancer.

I guess all I’m trying to say is that life is short. We should be reminded everyday that we know not what the future holds. And just to be open and kind to our fellow brothers and sisters.

Next time walk up talk to the people you are judging.

You might just find something that you need.

    You may even have fun.

I went to Disneyland June 12th-16th of this year. On Saturday the 13th these “rainbow kids” as I was calling them were every where. I came back the next day with full intentions of taking as many pics of them as I could. Weird though… on my 5 day trip, I only seen them that one day. But on that one day they were every where… EVERY WHERE!! My friend had spent a weekend there 2 weeks prior to me and when I returned and asked her about it she said she didn’t see anything like it. As annoying as they were, with their chanting and dancing, they made my trip even more memorable!

So someone’s a freak for trying to be unique, trying to stand out, for being slightly different?

Aha, pathetic much. And lol@ you for calling them emos/goths.
They’re people too, just who dress slightly different to you, and you seem like a hypocritical tosser who has to have everyone and everything the same. Dislike.

And no I’m not a kandi kid, :)

It really filled my eyes with tears to hear us described as that. We are not freaks, we love bright colors and fun bracelets. I collect bracelets, called Kandi, and am thus called a Kandi Kid, or raver. We’re not on extacy (at least most of us), but are really considered the happiest subculture that exists. Thus, the “Happiest Place on Earth” would draw us. I personally love DisneyLand, and love the childrens’ characters. We are not FREAKS. No more than you are.

  • Christian // August 29, 2009 at 8:17 pm | Reply

WTF?!dude you people are hating on ravers, were not emo, were not freaks, we believe in plur (peace. love. unity. respect. and responsibility) and we are considered the happiest ’subculture on earth’. where do you stand with your accusations, you do not understand us, you have given our life-style a chance. who died and gave you the right to call us freaks? well i will have you know i am a proud raver and bonafied kandi kid, and im dam proud of it. So you go ahead an laugh at us because were different, we’ll laught at you because your all the same.

I’m not a raver, but i do listen to techno and i do wear candies all the time.I wish i were there that day, so i can get a taste of the R.A.V.E. culture, meet other ravers and experience another culture other than just being like everyone else. There is more out there than just being a clone and another sheep.

theyre a bunch of free spirited kids that probably dont give a shit about your petty attempt at criticism. while you’re whining about their fashion sense and lack of social conformity, theyre living their lives more fearlessly than your tiny little mind can imagine.

  • Nick // September 7, 2009 at 7:11 am | Reply

I feel that the view you all have of us is totally wrong. The Extacy thing is a stereotype i hate when ppl think just cuz we are RAVERS we all have to take extacy n other drugs…..let it go not every1 uses drugs for those who do it is their choice. We are not emo goth kids looking to find our vioces; we are regular ppl just like every1 else. So wat if we like to wear colorful braclets and off the wall outfits thats who we are.

  • Anonymous // September 7, 2009 at 7:18 am | Reply

it was RAVER DAY at disneyland and the bracelets are called ‘KANDI’ and the people that wear them are kandi kids, and ravers, not freaks…. dont judge when you dont know what you are talking about. ravers are the friendliest, most loving people on the planet. they live their lifestyle by a philosophy called “PLUR”… that is PEACE.LOVE.UNITY.RESPECT….for everyone. did you try talking to one of them and asking what it was all about and why they were dressed like that?? its a way to express themselves, and not care about what anyone else thinks. so please, next time you classify people like this as “emo freaks” please dont be so ignorant.

raving is the new woodstock of our generation…
its a creative and beautiful outlet that welcomes everyone…

i have been going to events for a year now and i have fallen deeply in love. i am a sober raver aswell…its not that difficult to go and feel the music sober :)

please dont call us freaks or emo sene kids…

we truly are the ones that are comfortable with ourselves that we dont give a crap what people think…and raver day at disney land is amazing haha

(for all of you that do not know what kandi is, is is the bracelets that the “kids” trade with each-other to spread a little love and light)

PLUR stands for peace.love.unity.respect which eveyone should try to pass along every day <3

    ~Peace~

(p.s. everyone should go to one in their life, itll change u)

Your offensive tone towards people you don’t know is super un Christ-like. I mean, I’m just commenting here, I don’t doubt you felt surprised by these groups of people dressed all wacky like.
Not sure if you noticed by all the comments posted by the people who are part of that group you ripped on… But it seems you haven’t apologized. Maybe you have, only through a personal Email or something… Or maybe, I missed it among the other comments. So correct me if I’m wrong.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could show them a lil compassion, if you haven’t done so already?
I hope you haven’t done this name-calling with the knowledge of how bad name-calling can really hurt a person. (creepy/freak… yes that could be considered hurtful.)
Your tone was neither curious or interested, but rather rude and even condescending… It was like you were taking about hideous animals you’ve never heard of. To inquire is fine, yes, but the manner you did it was underhandedly arrogant. You can’t pass this off as innocent wonder.

ok so um, i love how u added in the smelly tourist part.
maybe your that smelly tourist, and people shall beable to go and attend disney land any damn well way they please.

    - people like you are the reason why there are wars- because pinheaded, NOT THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX OF YOUR LITTLE INCOMPETENT MIND pisses people off.

They went there to have agood time, ok?
isnt that the reason why is disneyland?
    the happiest place on earth?
    —-were they not being happy?

happy colors, happy feelings… like seriously…
    chill out.
accept people for who they are.
and uh yeah, PEACE, LOVE, UNITY RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY.

  • shenk // October 29, 2009 at 1:27 pm | Reply

    First hi to everybody.
I’m just discovering the world of Kandi and it seems just the perfect style for me. I’m known as the one who is always happy and at the moment im feeling like to be the most PLUR here. You kandi kids who wrote your comments here have very opinions. You respect the PLUR but do not allways live by it. I just wanted to say – respect the writer who said you were freaks. It was totally normal saying that. That was just his first objective opinion.
Next… there are different persons, or may I say reasons someone is a kandy kid. Some I think are like “peter pan”… they just dont want to grow up and are actually emo…they hate life and just blind themselves with candy. BUT… the most of candy kids, I think, or in fact, i hope, are just loving life and are happy just to live. They respect. They are peacefull. They love to socialise and with that comes unity. Unitiy of people in wich people feel good, feel safe, arent acting and are just themselves – feel comfortable.
    SO…..please learn to live PLUR
your life will become happier. Every religion is actually based on PLUR or at least partually.

    PLUR ::

ps: respect my lack of knowlage for writting :: xP hehe:: and have a nice PLUR day::

it was a raver day aka a day set by some one that is spread around thee rave scene usually through the internet that a big group of ravers/kandi kids attend

  • Scooby // November 24, 2009 at 10:49 am | Reply

I highly agree with Christian. I’ve been raving for over 10 years. I LOVE the music, the possitive vibes, the good people and, having fun with people you don’t know but, are your friends at the end of the night. There is NO OTHER scene I’ve EVER heard of where that happens. And, Yes I am a sober raver. Try going to a rave, I seriously doubt you will ever experiance anything like that or ever meet people as positive ever again. You will go back to your regular life and, miss the feeling you can only get at the raves. P.L.U.R.R. <333333
